Mandatory Insurance
Auto insurance is mandatory in Edmonton and throughout Alberta. The Alberta Government mandates that all drivers have three types of insurance:
- Third-party liability for damage and injuries that you cause to others - the minimum required by law is $200,000.
- Accident benefits coverage, which covers medical payments, income replacement, funeral costs, counselling, and more if you or your passengers are injured, regardless of fault.
- Direct Compensation for Property Damage (DCPD), which helps to repair or replace your vehicle after an accident where another driver is at fault.

Recommended Insurance
We highly recommend going above and beyond the mandatory auto insurance coverage required by the Government of Alberta. Optional car insurance coverage, like all-perils coverage, which provides greater protection if your vehicle is damaged in a collision and protects your vehicle from theft, vandalism, and risks like fire and hail damage, is popular for its broad protection.
We also recommend increasing your third-party liability coverage; $200,000 is simply not enough coverage for many accidents.

Full Coverage Insurance
Coverage for your vehicle can extend beyond coverage for damage and injuries. Full insurance coverage can include protection for loss of use, policies that stop insurers from considering depreciation if your vehicle is written off, and even policies that extend to non-owned automobiles.
